GILGIT: The Awami Action Committee, a grouping of religious, political and regional parties, on Sunday announced to organise a protest march from all the district headquarters of Gilgit-Baltistan to the region’s capital here on Tuesday against withdrawal of the wheat subsidy.

Protests continued in the headquarters of Gilgit, Diamer, Skardu, Ghizar, Hunza Nagar districts for the sixth straight day on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference here, AAC convener Ehsan Ali advocate said the committee had unanimously decided to start a march from all districts of GB to Gilgit city on April 22 against the wheat subsidy withdrawal by the federal government.

He said that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan were ready to go to any extent to force the government to reverse its decision to impose wheat subsidy on the region. He added that protests would also be held in all the main cities of the country.

Mr Ali claimed that the regional administration had imposed section 144 to thwart protests, and warned that if any untoward incident happened, all the responsibility would rest with the government.

Addressing the press conference, JUI GB ameer Mualana Abdul Sami said the protest movement would not end till the government reversed the decision. “The government has made promises to take back the decision, but so far no practical step has been taken in this respect,” he said.[facebook][tweet][pinterest][follow id=”Username” ]
