Islamabad: A delegation of tour operators from Pakistan attended the fourth Silk Road Pearl Kashghar International Tourism and Cultural festival held in Kashghar, China. The event was organized by the Xinjiang Tourism Corporation. The PATO delegation was led by President Amjad Ayub. The PATO delegation also attended meetings and conferences during the festival, to discuss opportunities of cross-border tourism. The delegates have reportedly agreed to work together for promotion of tourism in the region.PATO sources informed that the Chinese official, especially the commissioner of Xingjiang province and Tourism officials, have shown “keen interest” in promoting tourism in both countries.
It is pertinent to note that every year thousands of tourist from mainland China visit the Khujerav border area, but due to absence of protocols and agreement they are unable to come to Gilgit-Baltistan, a region within Pakistan having immense tourism potential. Similarly, Pakistani and tourists willing to visit China are unable to make it through the border easily, which hampers tourism and, in turn, the potential of economic growth.(Hamoon)
