Attabad Lake of Pakistan is one of the most beautiful sights of Pakistan, which truly gives you a feeling of heaven on earth. Attabad Lake, also known as Hunza Lake, is located in the gorgeous Hunza Valley of northern Pakistan. The striking natural lake was formed in January 2010 due to a massive landslide at Attabad village in Gilgit-Baltistan, 9 miles (14 km) upstream (east) of Karimabad that occurred on January 4, 2010.

The landslide came out as a huge disaster for the locales, as almost twenty people were killed and the flow of Hunza River was blocked for a long period of five months. Due to the flooding in lake, more than 6,000 were displaced from upstream villages; a further 25,000 got trapped and snowed under over 12 miles (19 km) of the Karakoram Highway. By June 2010, the Attabad Lake reached 13 miles (21 km) long and over 100 meters in depth, when it began flowing over the landslide dam, completely submerging lower Shishkat and partly flooding Gulmit. The subdivision of Gojal was massively affected by the Attabad Lake flooding with the greatest number of flooded buildings including more than 170 houses and 120 shops.

Due to the huge tragedy of Attabad Lake flooding and blockage of Karakoram Highway, the residents of the area also suffered lack of food and other basic items. By June 4, water outflow from the Attabad Lake had increased to 3,700 cu ft/s (100 m3/s). Though, the lack of government support and action has made the situation worse at the spot, but the beauty of Attabad Lake is undeniable.

Keeping in view the striking splendor of this natural sight, it can be made a wonderful tourism point. If proper concentration for the development of the area will be paid by the Pakistan Government, Attabad Lake can surely be turned into an amazing tourist spot, which in turn can earn huge foreign revenues which can also solve issues around the areas. The media sources are working hard to highlight the problems related to Attabad Lake and many documentaries have also been made regarding the issue.
