Gilgit: Wheat price fixed at 14 rupees per kilogram, 1500 policemen to be recruited

Bowing to the pressure from the public, political groups and civil society, the Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet today decided to withdraw the hike in the price of wheat. Fourteen (14) rupees will be charged per kilogram. Withdrawal of subsidy and the resultant price hike had created a political storm in Gilgit-Baltistan. Around 13 political and civil society organizations had formed an “Awami Action Committee” to launch a movement against the decision.
The Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet also decided to recruit 1500 new police officials for protecting tourist spots in vulnerable parts of the region.
It was also decided that the credentials of more than 700 teachers will be examined to ascertain legality of their hiring. Allegations of corruption in recruitments has emerged as a huge issue in Gilgit-Baltistan. Recently two senior officials of the education department were forcibly retired for being involved in bribery and illegal hirings.
A committee was also formed to discuss the issue of contract officers of grade 17 and 18 who are facing an uncertain situation for a long period.pamirtime
