NEW YORK: British children’s TV programs swept the 2nd International Emmy Kids Awards, winning four of the six categories.

The British winners included “Pet School” in the non-scripted entertainment category. In that show, children learn how to look after animals. The British also won the factual category with “Same But Different,” which tells the stories of 7 to 11 year olds with disabilities.
“Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom” (preschool) and “Room on the Broom” (animation) were the other British shows honored at Monday night’s awards ceremony held at Chelsea Piers in New York.
Brazil’s “Pedro & Bianca,” about non-identical twins, one white and the other black, won the Emmy for best series. The Emmy for TV movie/mini-series went to Canada’s “The Phantoms,” based on the inspiring real-life story of the small-town Bathurst High School basketball team that pulled together to win the New Brunswick provincial championship one year after seven players and the coach’s wife were killed in a van crash.
The awards presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences celebrate excellence in children’s TV programming outside the U.S.
“Tonight’s winning programs demonstrate the high standard of quality programming we expect for kids television, and we are proud to recognize them with the Emmy,” said International Academy President Bruce L. Paisner.
The presenters of the Emmy statues included Canadian actor Demetrius Joyette, Swedish and Danish kids programming hosts Malin Olsson and Christian Volfing, “Sesame Street’s” Allison Bartlett, and the German preschool character Die Maus from “The Show with the Mouse” with co-creator Arwin Maiwald.
