The Supreme Applet Court of Gilgit-Baltistan has postponed the by-election of GBLA-6 (Hunza) for three weeks. The election was previously slated for May 28. Reports suggest that the judge made the decision tocomplete the hearing of two pending criminal cases against Baba Jan who is contesting in the election. Mr. Jan is supported by the Awami Workers Party (AWP).

The election will be held after the hearings, reports said. The judges reportedly said that “if Mr. Jan to contests the election now, and if the court decided to reject his appeal against life sentence, then he will be disqualified any how.”

It is pertinent to mention here that acceptance of Baba Jan’s nomination papers has been challenged by PPP’s Zafar Iqbal. Previously, Mr. Jan’s nomination papers were rejected by the returning office on request of Mr. Iqbal; however, a court decreed in favor of Mr. Jan, ordering the election commission to accept his papers. Mr. Iqbal has appealed against the court’s decision.(mountaintv)
