THE Karakoram International University (KIU) is the only university in Gilgit-Baltistan. Many poor students get education at their doorsteps. The university has not only enhanced the literacy rate of Gilgit-Baltistan but is also providing opportunities to poor students to get education in their own region.
Gilgit-Baltistan is a province with the fastest growing literacy rate in Pakistan. Unfortunately, sectarian clashes at the university have created problems for students and semester examinations have been disturbed. Whenever such clashes occur, the university is closed. It seems that the university administration and the provincial government have not been able to curb the issue.
The sectarian clashes start in the university and spread to Gilgit city, and then protest demonstrations and meetings are held against each other in the city.
Universities produce mature minds but the story of KIU is different.
I request the students of the university to play a positive role and create peace and harmony. If the provincial government wants the progress of Gilgit-Baltistan, then sectarian clashes should be controlled and severe punishments be given to those who create chaos in the university.
