GILGIT: The works department in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) has decided to re-conduct tests and interviews for the contract staff working in grade 12 or above.

Only those who pass the test will be given permanent jobs while the rest will be sacked.

“This way we will be able to settle the issue of employee regularisation,” Minister for Works Bashir Ahmed Khan said on Tuesday, a day after the decision was taken in a meeting attended by Minister for Water and Power Didar Ali.

A test and interview will decide the fate of nearly 7,000 staff employed in the public works department on contract, majority of whom got in on references.

According to the minister of works, the staff qualifying test might be made mandatory for other government departments as well.

An inquiry conducted recently revealed that appointment of nearly 465 teachers in Skardu and Ghanche districts was against the protocol and recommended a retest for the continuation of their service. The provincial government has announced dates for tests of over 200 teachers.

On the instruction from Chief Secretary Younus Dagha, retests were ordered for teachers last week. After the inquiry, at least 80 employees of the Excise and Taxation Department were also sacked.

Adviser Forests and Wildlife Aftab Haider acknowledged that corruption has taken place in all government departments. “The education department is ruined by giving employment to people with fake degrees,” said Haider who is also the secretary general of Pakistan Peoples Party.
