Today, We want to congratulate Dr. Jan Alam, someone who might not be a social media star, but whose work and dedication deserve every bit of recognition. From the small village of Ghaimash in Karim Abad (Hunza), Dr. Alam has made an incredible journey to recently becoming a Full Professor (BPS-21) at Hazara University. This promotion is not just a personal achievement—it’s a proud moment for Ghaimash and the wider Karimabad community, showing that hard work and commitment can take you far, no matter where you start.
With over 24 years in his field, Dr. Alam has made a real impact. He has published more than 70 research papers in national and international scientific journals, significantly contributing to botany plant conservation and ethnobotany, particularly documenting medicinal plants and traditional knowledge in the Himalayas. Dr. Alam has explored various meadows and mountains in the Himalayas and Karakoramranges in search of unique plant species. His work has preserved valuable cultural heritage and fueled conservation efforts. As a mentor, he has supervised more than 60 Ph.D. and M.Phil. students, helping shape the next generation of environmental/ecology leaders in Pakistan.
What makes Dr. Alam truly special is his commitment to making science accessible. He’s currently working on a unique book in Burushaski, the language of his home region, dealing with plants of Hunza Valley. In this book, he will cover the unique plant species found in the Hunza region along with images, traditional knowledge known to locals, and basic scientific information about these species. He will also provide English translation to share this unique knowledge with a wider audience in the world. This unique project, hopefully, will bring a conservation opportunity forthe unique intellectual heritage of the unique Burushaski language.
Beyond academia, Dr. Alam is dedicated to his community. He provides financial assistance to those in need and is a steady source of guidance for young people, offering advice on education and career paths. His presence at local gatherings and support for community initiatives make him a beloved figure, someone who uplifts his community every chance he gets.
Dr. Jan Alam’s story reminds us that impactful work doesn’t always come with fame or fanfare. His journey from a small village to a Full Professor is a powerful example of what dedication, knowledge-sharing, and a giving spirit can achieve. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jan Alam on this well-deserved promotion!
