ISLAMABAD,(APP):National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications Friday recommended that universities and other institutions may be provided 3G and 4G services to meet future requirements of the country. The Committee, chaired by Capt (Retd) Muhammad Safdar, discussed performance of Universal Service Fund (USF) Special Communications Organization (SCO), Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) and budget proposals relating to Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for year 2014-15. The agenda items were discussed in detail and committee made appropriate recommendations. However, it appreciated performance of USF for bringing-up technology from 3G to 4G and also for making efforts for its expansion to 5G.
The Committee directed USF to provide its services in health and education sectors, particularly in far-flung areas so that masses may get its benefits through inter-connectivity with big hospitals of different cities.
The Committee also lauded performance of USF in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Giglit-Baltistan (GB) and suggested to expand its 3G services network to FATA and Balochistan.
It also extended support to SCO, in case it expands its network to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) as well.
The Committee further recommended that if SCO is provided proper patronage in its out-ranged areas it can add more revenues to government exchequer.
Earlier, Minister of State for Information Technology, Anusha Rehman briefed the Committee about performance of the Ministry, its attached departments and the ongoing projects.
She informed the Committee about Ministry’s efforts to shift the technology to broad-spectrum of 3G to 4G and 5G  in future.
